While fresh, clean drinking water is taken for granted in many places, it is a scarce resource in others, due to either scarcity of water or contamination of water sources.

Some 1.1 billion people, or 18 per cent of the worlds population, lack access to safe drinking water.

Although 70 per cent of the world´s surface is covered with water, only 2.5 per cent of the water is freshwater, while 97.5 per cent is salt water. Nearly 70 per cent of the freshwater is frozen in ice caps, and most the remainder is present as soil moisture, or lies in deep underground aquifers as inaccessible groundwater. Less than 1 per cent of the world´s freshwater ressources is accessible for human use.
